Just wondering
So, for those of you Dems, or left-leaning independents, if Hillary loses can you support Obama? And if so, why? I loved Romney but I will probably vote for McCain. I don't really like him enough to be devastated if he loses, though. I am only doing it because I couldn't handle seeing another Ruth Bader Ginsberg in the courts. I am now a one-issue woman. I don't really see McCain doing anything else that would put me on his side. I feel very strongly about judges, though, so I will have to side with the devil. ;-)

Yes-I would be able to support Obama over McCain. Truly, Clinton and Obama's platforms are so similar it is sometimes hard to remember who said what. I (as per my previous post) prefer Hillary based on a few small differences.
Lately I have been reading a lot about McCain, however, and I am getting ready to post about my changing attitudes...he may have some redeeming qualities.
Ouch! One issue? One of my big frustrations with Utah (Mormon) republicans is their tendency towards just one or two issues. It's like they have on blinders and can't see anything but their particular issue. If someone/some idea is really sound on several issues, but not their "pet" issue, they can't support that candidate (or bill, or idea, etc.)
I have a few issues that catch my attention and Mitt really wasn't my guy on one of them, but I tried to look at more than just that issue.
I think immigration reform, sound economic policy, education, infrastructure and healthcare are all important. The integrity if the candidate is also very important to me.
I don't like McCain, Obama or Clinton, so it's a toss-up for me. I guess it will depend on who McCain's running mate it.
I don't usually tend to be a one issue person, either. Unfortunately, on the other issues that I hold most important, all the candidates are the same. My big issues are judges, abortion, government spending(taxes and how they use/abuse them) and immigration. I think John McCain is pretty much the same with the Dems when it comes to the last two issues.
I know that he will be a strong advocate for life. I think that abortion is a part of our society, though and it will not go away. The real issue is how we will regulate it. I feel like the judges that are appointed will make a huge difference with this issue. Will parental notification be necessary? Will late term abortion be outlawed? How much education is a part of the abortion process? These among other legal issues are important to me. I feel like judges have so much power and if we have liberal judges they will rule in favor of things like imminent domain and 13-year-olds getting abortions without family support.
So, without McCain being very different from the rest of the choices, I just have to suck it up and pick the lesser of all evils. I think that he is not an honorable man. I don't like him particularly, but I dislike him less than Clinton and Obama.
I have to say too, that the Mormon Republican thing is not just a Mormon thing. I live in a heavily evangelical area and many of them loved Huckabee simply because he was a Southern Baptist preacher. That was their one issue. At least my one issue has some practical application.
I do think if you pick one issue, it at least should be OBJECTIVELY very important-I believe supreme court judge nomination is.
It is sad to reduce down to one issue-but I think Dani is right, it is a natural consequence of candidate-disenchantment. Fortunately, for people like me, anyone (truly, anyone) is better than Bush-we can only move up!
I just wanted to give my two cents on a related topic. If I were to base my decision solely on one issue it would be health care - and I would probably vote for Obama. Being self employed... Willey and I are totally struggling to have good health care. We pay more for health insurance than we do for our house payment...and that is for VERY BASIC insurance. Maternity is not covered, and we have a huge deductible for everything else...
Something has to change so that hard working Americans can have affordable health care. It frustrates me that there are those who purposely make less money so that the government will pay for their health care, give them food stamps and other benefits. We work our tails off and still can barely afford worthless health insurance. I hope and pray that the next president makes it a priority to fix our health care system!
After reading McCain's plan for health insurance, I don't dislike him so much. ttp://exploremccain.com/Informing/

He said, "Controlling health care costs will take fundamental change - nothing short of a complete reform of the culture of our health system and the way we pay for it will suffice."
He also talks about giving a tax credit to help with insurance costs...If it would actually happen, that would be a great idea.
I agree that mending our health care system is important. I think that we need to be careful how we do it, though. It needs to be done in such a way that research is not stifled and taxes are not increased.
I would hate for the US to take on a socialist stance on medicine. There is a reason why Canadians come here for medicine and that is because socialist medicine is lacking.
Also, we are in a global economy now. Our tax system not only hurts the "wealthy" it hurts our ability to compete. Companies leave the US or simply never come here because our taxes are not as good as other countries. That is part of the reason companies outsource.
Being uninsured is scary and I know we personally were less likely to take care of our illnesses when we were uninsured. I also know that so many of these plans politicians come up with have repercussions that go beyond health care.
